Tips for Maintaining Your Above-ground Pool Before Needing Pros

Above-ground pools are gaining popularity because of their affordability and ease of maintenance compared to in-ground units. They’re also easier to install, and if you get an inflatable model, you can move it as you want.

You can easily maintain an above-ground pool without calling professional installers. Here are valuable tips for DIY above-ground pool maintenance.

Remove Leaves and Other Debris
Falling leaves and dead insects are the most common contaminants that compromise the quality of your pool water. It is advisable to clean the surface at least once daily. Use a skimmer to drag the leaves and insects from the water until it is clear. If you fail to do this, the leaves and debris decompose, making the pool unsafe for human use and a potential health hazard.

Install a Pool Cover
Although regular cleaning is mandatory, it cannot be very pleasant to do it daily. Installing a pool cover is the best way to avoid this boring and repetitive task. This keeps the leaves and insects from the water, making your work easier.

Besides, a pool cover reduces the amount of water lost through evaporation. This saves you the time and money you’d have to spend refilling the swimming pool.

A pool cover is also an excellent insulator. If you want the water to remain warm, the cover traps heat inside, reducing the need to switch on the electric heater.

Lastly, a pool cover prevents children and pets from accessing the pool. As a result, the risk of drowning accidents reduces.

Clean the Interior Surface
Your above-ground swimming pool needs occasional cleaning to eliminate stains and prevent algae build-up. The recommended interval is once monthly. However, you might need to do it more often during summer because of the increased activity.

Drain the pool before you start cleaning. Then, use a soft-bristled wire brush to scrub stains off the interior walls. If you encounter a stubborn spot, soak it in vinegar and leave it for a few hours before scrubbing again. It also helps to use a vacuum to suck dirt from corners and other hard-to-reach areas.

Test the Water
In the past, you had to call the pros to test various chemical levels in your pool water. You can do it yourself by obtaining a test kit from your local pool supplies shop. Most test kits have a strip with different colours to indicate the concentration of chemicals in your pool water.

Whenever you clean your pool’s interior, test the water after refilling it. Use the results to identify what needs replenishing before you start swimming again. It’s also important to test the water after heavy rains or prolonged periods of idleness.

Check the Filtration System and Pump
Lastly, checking your pool’s pump and filtration system is crucial. These two are vital to ensuring the proper flow of water in and out of your backyard oasis.

Read the manufacturer’s installation guide when disassembling the pump and filter. After disassembly, run water through the pump until it comes out clean. This ensures no dirt and other items could clog the pump. Repeat similar steps with the filter.

Also, remember to replace the filter every six months to ensure your pool remains in pristine condition.

Wrapping Up
A swimming pool is a valuable addition to any home, allowing you to relax and unwind after a busy workplace. However, it needs proper maintenance to provide a rewarding experience. Using the tips above, you can save money and keep your pool in good condition without calling the pros. Nonetheless, you should call your installer at least once yearly for thorough inspection and servicing.
