BALTIMORE.- The Walters Art Museum presents the exhibit Mightier than the Sword: The Satirical Pen of KAL. Kevin Kallaugher, a.k.a. KAL, is known throughout the world as a cartoonist on the front line of free expression. "Commanding a masterful style, Kallaugher stands among the premier caricaturists of the [twentieth] century," said The World Encyclopedia of Cartoons in 1999. In this exhibition, the Walters celebrates his 17 years as the editorial cartoonist at The Baltimore Sun and his 26 years at the London news magazine The Economist. As one of the greatest practitioners of the craft of cartooning, KAL is a most incisive and influential political commentator in the United States today. This show will include the cartoons and caricatures for which KAL is renowned as well as lesser-known works of sculpture, film, and 3-D animation. It will feature cartoons illustrating local, national, and international political satire and cover a broad range of social issues to which he is committed. There will also be a significant educational component to the exhibition where visitors will observe how KAL composes his characters and then be invited to learn these skills themselves.
