PITTSFIELD, MA.- The Berkshire Museum presents the exhibit Baseball: Art of the Game through October 29, 2006. Art and baseball memorabilia celebrate the legendary Boston Red Sox/New York Yankee rivalry. The show includes seventeen objects from the private collection of Stephen Wong (through mid-August). Based in Hong Kong, Wong holds one of the world's most extensive collections of baseball memorabilia and is the author of Smithsonian Baseball. Highlights include: an early 1930s Yankees hat, game-worn by Lou Gehrig; Ted Williams' game-worn, home uniform from the 1950 and 1951 season; Joe DiMaggio's game-used bat from the 1949 All Star Game at Ebbets Field, game-worn jerseys of Yogi Berra and Dom DiMaggio, and a full uniform game-worn by Bobby Doerr an American League Ban Johnson baseball, circa 1927, autographed by both Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
Also featured are photographs by artist David Levinthal (b. 1949), collects toys and figurines that he assembles into tableaus evoking powerful historical and cultural themes. His Baseball series features figures of Carlton Fisk, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Pedro Martinez, and other athletes.
The Berkshire Museum was founded in 1903 by Zenas Crane, the grandson of the founder of Crane & Company. When he built the museum, his vision was to create an inviting environment for everyone, not just the elite. He sought to use the museum's varied collection to enrich, educate and delight the county's citizens of all ages. This vision guides the museum to this day. At the heart of the museum's mission is a commitment to playing an active cultural and educational role in the community.
"Wally," the life-size front lawn-dwelling stegosaurus, was constructed for the Sinclair Dinoland Pavilion at the 1964-65 World's Fair by the renowned wildlife sculptor Louis Paul Jonas. He welcomes visitors to the only art, natural science and history museum in Western Massachusetts. Fourteen galleries, an aquarium, a 291 seat fully equipped, air conditioned theater, classrooms and a museum store make up the Berkshire Museum.
