Master Watercolors to Open at the Farnsworth |

The Farnsworth Art Center.

ROCKLAND, ME.- The Farnsworth Art Center presents the exhibit The American Medium: Master Watercolors from the Collection starting on June 16. While the technique of watercolor painting is one of the most difficult to master, in the hands of an accomplished practitioner, it is one of the most visually rewarding. The medium became particularly popular in Europe and America at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries as the development of better pigments and faster colors spurred interest and experimentation.
In America, in particular, this more affordable medium reached a pinnacle of expression in the work of artists like John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper. The American Medium presents work from the Farnsworth's collection by some of America's most renowned masters in this area including works by Maurice Prendergast, John Marin, Charles Sheeler and Charles Demuth, among many others. The installation is designed to interface with Winslow Homer: A Collector's Passion Works from The Arkell Museum at Canajoharie and Andrew Wyeth: Early Maine Paintings, 1937 and 1938, and showcase the breadth and strength of the museum's watercolor holdings.
