HUNTINGTON, WV.- The Huntington Museum of Art opens the exhibit The Light of Day: Contemporary Prints and Studio Glass from the Permanent Collection through October 1. Beyond the traveling exhibitions displayed in the galleries, the Huntington Museum of Art's value is also measured by its permanent collection. Since the founding of the Museum in 1952, the permanent collection has grown to exceed 11,000 works of art through curatorial purchases and generous gifts from donors.
Among the thousands of works presented in the Museum's galleries, and housed in the Museum's vaults are excellent examples of contemporary prints and studio glass. The Light of Day highlights key works in these media created over the past four decades.
Prints on display include works by such noted artists as Alex Katz, Andy Warhol, Richard McLean, and Philip Pearlstein, and many other important artists working after 1960.
As early as 1976, the Museum began to add studio glass pieces to its collection, providing a natural bridge between the Museum's Ohio Valley glass, art glass, and contemporary sculpture collections.
Important works by artists who participated in the trailblazing bicentennial project and exhibition funded by the NEA titled Focus West Virginia: Artist in the Factory Project, will be on view along with early works by pioneers of the studio glass movement.
