ASPEN.- The Aspen Art Museum opened the exhibit Doug Aitken: A Photographic Survey through July 23. Known primarily for his multi-screen video installations, Los Angeles-based artist Doug Aitken has gained international recognition for his immersive explorations of the experience of time and location.

Aitken’s exhibition at the Aspen Art Museum will be the first exhibition dedicated solely to his photography. A selective survey of works produced over the course of his career (including several works never before exhibited), Aitken’s Aspen Art Museum show will be organized according to recurring visual themes. From night-time cityscapes to deserted gas stations, airports, and bus depots, Aitken’s dream-like photographs contain the same spatial and temporal dislocation and narrative suggestion as his installations.

On the occasion of the exhibition, the Aspen Art Museum will publish a lavishly illustrated artist’s book, organized collaboratively with the artist. Aitken has created a number of groundbreaking publications, most recently Broken Screen: Expanding the Image, Breaking the Narrative, a book of conversations between the artist and a roster of twenty-six carefully chosen artists, filmmakers, designers, and architects.

Aitken was awarded the International Prize at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999, as well as the Alrich Award in 2000. His work was included in the 1997 and 2000 Whitney Biennials, as well as the Biennial of Sydney in 2000.
