NEW YORK.- School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents Abstract and Real, a group exhibition examining the boundaries between traditional representation and abstraction. Curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries, the artists include current students Sunghee Jang, Wei Lieh Lee and Ryan Sullivan.
By distilling the fundamental geometric structure of her images, Sunghee Jangs delicately constructed oil paintings create a powerful, elemental impact. Simultaneously, her selective attention to detail maintains a fidelity to the observed world and offers the viewer a refined image hovering between abstraction and representation. Jang is a student in the MFA Fine Arts Department.
Wei Lieh Lees paper installation Limitation is assembled from sketchbook pages containing his thoughts and drawings. He begins by arranging blank pages on the wall, and then standing in one spot and making handprints on the paper in every direction as far as his arm can reach. He then bounds the printed pages into a book. After filling the sketchbook with his notations, Lee takes it apart and reassembles the pages on the wall to create the final artwork. Lee is a student in the BFA Advertising and Graphic Design Department.
In describing his work, Ryan Sullivan states: I make conceptual romantic artworks, fixed in a state of becoming. Composed of fragmentary bits of memory, observation and fantasy juxtaposed to actively encourage interpretation, Sullivans paintings evoke an enigmatic realm inviting the viewer to complete the picture. Sullivan is a student in the MFA Fine Arts Department.
