AMSTELVEEN, THE NETHERLANDS.- The Cobra Museum of Modern Art Amstelveen, with the financial support of the BankGiro lottery, has been successful in acquiring a masterpiece by the CoBrA artist Anton Rooskens. This represents the fulfilment of a long, cherished wish by the museum to add a top work from the painter’s oeuvre to its collection to mark the centenary year of Anton Rooskens (1906-1976).
The acquired painting ‘Village Negre’ from 1954 (oil on cavas, 98 x 76.5 cm) is regarded by experts as one of the finest Rooskens made from a series of paintings he produced directly after his African travels. The art work, from a private collection, had a pivotal role in the exhibition ‘Out of Africa’ which took place at the Cobra Museum in 2005.
