Richard Serra Will Replace Lost Sculpture
Richard Serra, Equal-Parallel/Guernica-Bengasi.

MADRID, SPAIN.- Artist Richard Serra and the Museo Reina Sofía have agreed that the artist will replace the sculpture titled 'Equal-Parallel/Guernica-Bengasi' which is currently lost. The sculpture weighs 38 tons. According to the museum, the new sculpture will have all of the effects of the previous one and will belong to the museum´s permanent collection. The sculptor will not charge for creating a new sculpture and the museum will pay for the materials used and the labor.

The work was purchased in 1987 by the Ministry of Culture and placed it in deposit a year later in a storage company because the Museo Reina Rosia did not have space. In October 2005 the museum noticed the work was missing and the director of the storage company had no information on its whereabouts. The work was part of the References: An artistic Meeting in Time that took place between May 26 and September 15, 1986.
