NEW YORK.- The Museum of Modern Art will celebrate this Sunday July 30 its MoMA P.S. 1 Summer Celebration. Artists will engage children of all ages in captivating hands-on workshops. Live family-friendly musical performances will keep you entertained all afternoon. Plus, a delightful variety of food will be on sale. All this in P.S.1’s inviting outdoor courtyard! Admission is free and no reservations are necessary.

You and your family can relax in the shade of Young Architects Program award winner BEATFUSE! by OBRA, an installation that creates a sense of interior space in the courtyard. The project includes tidal pools and water misters, offering climatic comfort by creating three distinct temperature zones.

Artist-led Workshops

The Infinite Combination with Blanka Amezuka

Using a wide range of materials, kids can take combinations of existing objects and remake them into new and unique creations. These results can be worn as decorative personal accessories or contributed to a community totem.

Tip-Top Hats with Liv Shedden

Everyone can join in the madcap fun, working with recycled materials to create fantastic pieces of wearable art. Hat designers can even compete in a contest for the tallest, widest, or craziest hat.

Shadow Puppets with McKendree Key

Inspired by elaborate and beautiful Indonesian shadow puppets, participants create their own shadow puppets with moving parts. Puppeteers are invited to demonstrate their skills on the big “shadow screen.” Every half-hour an improvised puppet show will show off the results.

Origami USA with Jean Baden-Gillette

This ancient technique can be explored in quiet contemplation. Using crease-and-fold patterns, children can turn simple paper into any chosen design. This workshop is designed for all levels, from first-timers to experienced folders.

Loop of the Loom with Yukako Satone
A simple style of loom opens up the world of saori, a contemporary weaving technique from Japan. Kids can express themselves by adding their own style to a daylong group project. Materials are provided by Materials For The Arts, a not-for-profit program of the Department of Cultural Affairs. In partnerships with Department of Sanitation and NYC Board of Education, MFTA provides the City of New York with creative waste-reduction alternatives and provides cost-efficient and interesting materials for schools and nonprofit arts organizations.

Musical Performances

Sufferin Succotash

myspace.com/ssufferin Sufferin

Succotash offers a rich, flavorful gumbo of down-home blues, rags, and hokum favorites, along with Cajun and Creole dance tunes. They perform musical gems of a bygone era with all the vitality of a sweaty Saturday-night house party, with fiddle, harmonica, button accordion, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and other traditional acoustic instruments.

Mudville

www.mudvillemusic.com or myspace.com/mudville

Mudville offers esoteric rhythms. The New Yorker praised the band for its “down-tempo beats, haunted-matinee-style organ playing, and electronic flourishes [that] coalesce into something familiar yet wholly unique.” Mudville performs with a full live band and features special guest body-contortionist Tara Quinn at this special event.

Manhattan Samba

www.manhattansamba.com

New York's longest-running authentic Brazilian samba drum ensemble, Manhattan Samba has been delivering its irresistible, energetic, driving rhythms to dance floors around the city for more than a decade. The all-percussion ensemble is a traditional Brazilian bateria, based on the drum groups that accompany the yearly carnival parades in Rio de Janeiro.

DJ Jeannie Hopper
