SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA.- A new water cascade may be built in Hyde Park to pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Australians who served in our defense forces, and to fulfill the original vision for the ANZAC Memorial.
The original plans for the Memorial, drawn up by Sydney architect Bruce Dellit, the winner of a design competition in 1930, included a water feature running from the back of the existing ANZAC Memorial, in Hyde Park South, to Liverpool Street.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said the Draft Plan of Management for Hyde Park, which will guide the management of Australia's oldest park, calls for a revisit of Dellit's original proposal. The Plan of Management is due to be considered by Council's Environment and Heritage Committee on Monday July 31 and if approved will be displayed for public comment.
"This water cascade was included in Mr Dellit's original plans, but it was never built," Ms Moore said.
RSL State President and Acting Chairman of the ANZAC Memorial Trust, Don Rowe praised the City's initiative. "The ANZAC Memorial is a magnificent tribute to all Australian men and women who served in our defense forces. This idea has our full support."
Ms Moore said the memorial would help the City commemorate its past. "A country cannot properly face its future without first addressing its past and if it is built, this new memorial would acknowledge the finest hours in Australian military history. Completion of the new water cascade would see Bruce Dellit's plans come full circle. So from the past, we can build a better memorial for the future."
"Not only would it honor the men and women who served, but it would beautify a relatively unused part of Hyde Park", said Ms Moore. "The proposed construction of the new water cascade would be a fitting tribute to the sacrifice of our defense force personnel."
A water re-use feasibility study undertaken as part of the Plan of Management shows that alternative water supply options such as Busby's Bore can be used to supply the proposed water cascade and for general park irrigation and cleaning. The City is currently investigating drought-proofing options for the park.
