CASTLEFORD, UK.- An exciting new public sculpture will open in Castleford’s town center on 29 September 2006, as part of the town’s long-term regeneration initiative. German artists, Winter/Hörbelt have been commissioned by Arts Council England, Yorkshire to create Cratehouse for Castleford, a beautiful, light-filled structure constructed from shipping containers and bottle crates. The artwork has been curated and managed by Yorkshire Sculpture Park following Winter/Hörbelt’s successful exhibition there in 2004. The Arts Council is a partner in The Castleford Project, a long-term regeneration initiative led by Channel 4 and Wakefield Council.

Using available mass-produced materials, Winter/Hörbelt, work with familiar objects whose contribution to contemporary life is significant but taken for granted. Cratehouse for Castleford will be on display for at least six months. Visitors will be invited to explore the artwork and enjoy the wonderful light that floods its translucent walls.

Castleford, a former mining town and birthplace of Henry Moore, has a rich cultural heritage and is undergoing major regeneration. This commission offers a significant contribution to the town’s culture-led regeneration and complements the community regeneration schemes being achieved through The Castleford Project – which will be the focus of the world’s first televised regeneration scheme when broadcast by Channel 4.

Winter/Hörbelt challenge the increasing global uniformity of urban spaces that suppress individual town spirit. Their work offers possibilities beyond everyday experience and suggests ways in which places and people can be extraordinary.
