NEW YORK.- As part of the commemoration of the fifth anniversary of 9/11, The World Trade Center Memorial Foundation today announced its first programming events for the Memorial Museum, "here: remembering 9/11," an outdoor photography exhibition, and "9/11 and the American Landscape: Photographs by Jonathan Hyman." The exhibitions will engage visitors at the World Trade Center site from two different vantage points: at ground level at the perimeter fence for the "here: remembering 9/11" exhibition and from the 45th floor of 7 World Trade Center, where "9/11 and the American Landscape: Photographs by Jonathan Hyman" will be exhibited. Both exhibitions will present photographs which document individuals, our city and our nation responding to a tragic event.

WTC Memorial Foundation Acting President Joseph Daniels, said, "Each day, thousands of visitors from all walks of life come to the World Trade Center site, seeking to pay their respects and to learn about the horror and heroism witnessed on September 11th. In commemoration of the fifth anniversary, the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation is hosting two exhibitions which will allow these visitors to remember the events of that day and look forward with renewed hope. These exhibitions are another important step in engaging the public to build a permanent memorial at the World Trade Center site and are an early precursor to the work of the Memorial Museum which will be a world-class institution that will both inform and inspire. We thank Silverstein Properties for allowing the opportunity for the '9/11 and the American Landscape' exhibition to take place in such an extraordinary setting in 7 WTC. In addition to enjoying this moving exhibition, visitors will have an incredible view of the start of construction for the Memorial from the 45th floor of 7 WTC."

Together, these exhibitions form a powerful tribute to mark the fifth anniversary of September 11th."

"here: remembering 9/11" features a selection of photographs from the "here is new york: a democracy of photographs" exhibition, which formally opened to the public in New York City on September 25, 2001, as well as additional photographs commissioned for the fifth anniversary. The Foundation will unveil the exhibition later this summer.

"9/11 and the American Landscape: Photographs by Jonathan Hyman," will feature a selection of 63 photographs of personal tributes and memorials created across the country in response to the attacks of 9/11.

Since September 11th, 2001, Jonathan Hyman has traveled the United States photographing the wide spectrum of American expression post-9/11 and has taken over 15,000 pictures of the personal tributes and memorials created in response to the attacks. From painted barnyards and firehouses to elaborate tattoos and neighborhood murals, the collection depicts a nation publicly coming to grips with a horrifying and shocking attack while at the same time trying to understand its new sense of vulnerability. The photographs present a unique chronicle of post-9/11 society as seen through the American vernacular.

"9/11 and the American Landscape: Photographs by Jonathan Hyman"

Jonathan Hyman traveled through parts of the Midwest and the East Coast from Maine to Virginia, making stops at Shanksville, Pa., the Pentagon, and Ground Zero for his photography project. In the fall of 2002, he photographed tributes from upstate New York to Chicago and back, passing through Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. In the summer of 2003, he joined a cross-country, 9/11 charity motorcycle ride at the Ohio/Pennsylvania border and photographed the ride all the way to its final destination in New York City. In the spring of 2005, he made another round-trip to Chicago from upstate New York.

"9/11 and the American Landscape: Photographs by Jonathan Hyman" curator and WTC Memorial Foundation Senior Advisor Clifford Chanin said, "From within sight of Ground Zero to the far corners of rural America, Jonathan Hyman captures markers of memory - imprints on the local landscape that bring back the essentials of September 11th. At times angry, at times sorrowful, often pitch-perfect, Hyman's works declare publicly the mix of private feelings that Americans of all stripes have shared. This exhibition stands in tribute not only to what was lost on September 11, 2001, but to the resolve and spirit of the American people."

Jonathan Hyman said, "The photographs I took, from the inner city to rural areas, from the spectacular to the banal, portray a nation constructing memories through the making of art as it attempts to simultaneously heal and understand the attacks."

"I feel a profound sense of sadness over the loss of so many lives and the damage the attacks caused and am deeply moved to have worked on a meaningful and useful project that coincided with a seminal moment in American history. I am honored to have my work displayed for the fifth anniversary of 9/11 and as the first event of the WTC Memorial Museum."

Mr. Hyman's photographs were presented at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. as part of the memorial concert, "Concert for America," which aired on the first anniversary of the attacks, as well as at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. and the Rico/Maresca Gallery in New York City.

"9/11 and the American Landscape: Photographs by Jonathan Hyman" is one of two Jonathan Hyman exhibitions being presented on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of 9/11. A selection of photographs from Jonathan Hyman's 9/11 series is also being exhibited by the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, PA, from September 8, 2006 to January 1, 2007.

A full color catalogue of the exhibition will be for sale, which includes an essay by acclaimed writer Pete Hamill. Mr. Hamill is a novelist, essayist and journalist whose career has spanned over forty years. He has been a columnist for the New York Post, the New York Daily News, New York Newsday, the Village Voice, New York magazine and Esquire. He has served as editor-in-chief of both the Post and the Daily News. Mr. Hamill witnessed the events of September 11, 2001, and its aftermath and wrote about them for the Daily News.

"9/11 and the American Landscape: Photographs by Jonathan Hyman" will be open to the public from September 8, 2006 to October 7, 2006 at 7 WTC, located at 250 Greenwich St., on the 45th floor. Admission to the exhibit is free.
