Underpin Installation Commissioned by Future Factory

NOTTINGHAM, UK.- Future Factory, based within Nottingham Trent University, has commissioned visual artist Ivan Smith to research and deliver a piece of work in response to CCAN (Centre for Contemporary Art Nottingham). The result of this extensive period of research is underpin, a significant installation sited within the Barker Gate Rest Garden in Nottingham’s historic Lace Market.

From 8 September to 20 October visitors to the rest garden will be able to view the installation, which combines the use of 30 concrete pillars, each housing their own photographic image of Nottingham’s city centre which can be viewed through slits carved into the pillars.

Future Factory is supported by Nottingham Trent University and Arts Council (East Midlands). underpin has received support from: Colin Watkin, St Mary’s Church, Prohibition, Nottingham Police and Nottingham City Council and financial support from Arts Council England (East Midlands). The construction of CCAN will begin in Autumn 2006 and it is scheduled to open in Autumn 2008.
