Leonora Carrington Pays Taxes with Works of Art
Leonora Carrington, Mula's Ox, 1977.

MEXICO CITY.- Leonora Carrington, a painter of British origin, has paid taxes to Mexico`s Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público (Mexico´s Internal Revenue Service better know by its initial SHCP) with works of art from her collection. The amount has not been specified.

The artist, who has been living in Mexico since 1943, delivered five small bronze sculptures to the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City with which she paid her dues under a program that allows artist to pay taxes with works of art.

The program has its origins in 1957, when Mexico`s Internal Revenue System invited artists such as Dr. Atl and David Alfaro Siqueiros turned over to the state part of their collection as a sui generis form of paying taxes, which offers two choices, the direct donation to a state museum´s collection, which the artist can choose or as a direct delivery to the SHCP.
