Home Away from Home at Waikato Museum
Work of art from the exhibition.

HAMILTON.- The Waikato Museum presents the exhibit Un Corrido Mexicano: Home away from home through October 1. This is a Mexican New Zealander's story. The story of Xavier is told through the objects that he, his partner, Carolyna Meade - Hart, and others of the Latino community brought with them as a natural consequence of migration. These objects remind them of a time and place in their homeland.

A corrido is a folk ballad, a poem or song about the life and events of people. Through a rich blend of folk and contemporary art, our eyes are welcomed to a personal viewing of this, a Mexican migrant's corrido.

The old adage home is where the heart is, brings to mind the notion of place and the emotional ties we have to it. Memories of family, cultural icons, traditions, beliefs, food, political situations and their implications are visible throughout this exhibition. The indigenous voice of the Zapatistas resonates through each object's story. They too have journeyed from a great distance with Xavier de la Cueva Meade bringing a piece of home with them, Mexico to Aotearoa.

The exhibition includes works from 2 of Xavier's brothers, now living in New York and Mexico. There are guest objects from other countries in a vitrine display, these are all sourced from the small but active Hamilton Latino Hispanic community revolving weekly during the 7 weeks of the exhibition.
