SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Continuing the celebration of LIMN’s 25th anniversary year, the renowned San Francisco design showroom will present LIMN Furniture: New Moves: Fast Forward and Instant Replay. The exhibition will present works of art furniture that are characterized by forms and expressions that aim to expand the public’s perception of what is furniture and what is art. The exhibition will run from November 17th, 2006 to January 7th, 2007 at LIMN, 290 Townsend Street in San Francisco, California with an opening reception on November 17th from 6 – 8 pm.

“Having explored the boundaries between art and design for over 25 years, LIMN continues to challenge assumptions regarding the value of everyday objects with New Moves: Fast Forward and Instant Replay,” said founder and CEO Dan Friedlander.

Today, furniture is the preferred vehicle of personal _expression for many artists. Contemporary furniture design has moved beyond the limits of function, and, in some cases, the tenets of good design and refined taste. Many of the pieces chosen for the exhibition inspire the question of whether a commonplace object such as a cabinet, table, or chair can convey a message other than its intended purpose as well as tell a story, or make a controversial statement.

“Pieces will contain content beyond function using metaphor, symbolism or narrative elements inducing wit, humor, commentary, and/or controversy,” explains Russell Piti, the curator of the exhibition. “Sensory experience may move beyond the visual and tactile and practical function may be secondary to simply being unabashedly beautiful.”

All objects exhibited in LIMN Furniture: New Moves: Fast Forward and Instant Replay are handmade using materials commonly associated with craft such as wood, metal, and stone, as well as newmaterials derived from modern technologies. Above all, craftsmanship is a constant and common attribute of the work in the show, as well as a necessary one if the furniture will successfully be viewed as both functional object and artistic _expression. Artists invited to participate in the exhibition include: Jennifer Anderson, Russell Baldon, Greg Benke, Robert Brady, Marc D’Estout, Donald Fortesque, Clay Foster, Mia Hall, Barbara Holmes, Kim Kelzer, Wendy Maruyama, Bob Marsh, Norma Pizarro, Harry Siter, Courtney Skott, and Brian Cordell Wilson.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, LIMN continues to be the premier resource for contemporary design-driven furniture, lighting and accessories on the west coast. From the beginning, its fantastically unorthodox approach to retail, groundbreaking exhibitions and special projects have made it an influential pioneer in the world of design and a destination for the design-minded traveling to San Francisco. For LIMN — an old English verb meaning “to draw or illuminate”—the discussion of design is paramount and the desire to introduce people to the best in design is a driving force. Since its founding by architect Dan Friedlander in 1981, LIMN has expanded to include LIMN Contract, LIMN Art Gallery, LIMN Sacramento, and LIMN Studio which designs special furniture collections, interiors, and architecture. Each is guided by the LIMN ethos—to foster the exchange of ideas in art and design. LIMN San Francisco features the best in design from over 1,200 international manufacturers in a 44,000 square-foot, multi-level showroom, making it one of the largest design stores in the country. This year LIMN San Francisco underwent renovations to create a 2,300 square foot retail store within the store featuring a curated collection of in-stock furniture and accessories. Redefining retail yet again, LIMN has created a special LIMN Concierge service that will assign the proper LIMN specialist to take the guest with needs beyond these offerings on an educated tour of the products found beyond the newly appointed “courtyard.” In LIMN’s 25th anniversary year, it has launched a limited edition LIM Rug Collection, The Log Cabin at LIMN, a made to order Finnish log cabin whose prototype is installed on the roof of the San Francisco store, and will open LIMN in Seattle in November.
