Behind the lens: Ren Hang - At Work captures the creative genius
The book emerges as a retrospective and a continuation of Ren Hang’s legacy.

NEW YORK, NY.- Ren Hang’s artistic brilliance and human vulnerability have always stood at the forefront of his photography, which blends the intimate, the provocative, and the deeply poetic. With Ren Hang — At Work, Peter Coeln and dienacht Publishing provide an exquisite tribute to the late artist, offering a rare glimpse into his creative process during a unique photoshoot in Vienna.

The book emerges as a retrospective and a continuation of Ren Hang’s legacy, connecting it to his landmark exhibition at OstLicht Photo Gallery a decade ago. This exhibition, the largest solo showcase of his work, drew an astonishing crowd of 3,000 visitors. Now, with Ren Hang — At Work, we are invited into the quieter, yet equally profound, moments behind the camera—where art is made, not just displayed.

Peter Coeln, a photographer and founder of Vienna’s OstLicht and WestLicht museums, was one of the few individuals Ren Hang allowed to document him during the creative process. Coeln’s narration provides an evocative account of a photoshoot held on a cool spring day in Vienna, where three nude models posed in the chilly waters of the Wien River and amidst the Wienerwald forest.

This intimate portrait of Ren Hang at work is filled with contrasts. Coeln describes moments of laughter, playfulness, and camaraderie among strangers who shared in the singular vision of the artist. These interactions, though lighthearted, were deeply serious in their commitment to Ren Hang’s aesthetic—an exploration of the human body’s vulnerability, beauty, and interconnectedness.

The book itself is meticulously designed to reflect the artist’s bold yet tender spirit. Featuring a printed half slipcase, open thread stitching, and foil embossing, Ren Hang — At Work is a tactile delight. The inclusion of seven fold-outs, a poster, and a booklet with five original works by Ren Hang adds layers to the experience, making it an object to be cherished.

The publication’s limited run of 600 copies, with only 300 available from the publisher, underscores its exclusivity.

Ren Hang’s life and career were marked by an extraordinary ability to juxtapose humor and arousal, pleasure and melancholy. Coeln’s reflections capture this dichotomy beautifully, painting a portrait of an artist who was both joyful and haunted. Ren Hang’s tragic death in 2017 at the age of 29 casts a shadow over his vibrant work, making this book an essential commemoration of his life, art, and enduring impact.

Ren Hang — At Work is an intimate window into the world of one of contemporary photography’s most unique voices. For admirers of Ren Hang, this book completes a circle—bringing us closer to the man behind the camera while honoring the unforgettable images he left behind.

Whether you are new to Ren Hang’s work or a longtime admirer, this publication is a poignant reminder of the beauty and fragility of both art and the artist.
