MUNICH.- The Museum Brandhorst’s “Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. Party of Life” exhibition has become a runaway success, welcoming its 190,000th visitor on January 21, 2025. The milestone was celebrated with a visit from Markus Blume, the Bavarian State Minister for Science and Art, who joined museum director Achim Hochdörfer, curator Franziska Linhardt, and collector Udo Brandhorst in congratulating the lucky visitor, Lena Linke, a local student. Linke received an exhibition catalog, bag, and posters as a special memento of her visit.

This impressive turnout makes “Party of Life” the most popular exhibition since the museum’s opening, contributing to a record-breaking year for the Museum Brandhorst in 2024, with nearly 230,000 visitors overall.

Minister Blume expressed his enthusiasm for the exhibition’s success: “A record-breaking start to the new year! I’m delighted to welcome the 190,000th visitor to ‘Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. Party of Life.’ The public interest is huge, and deservedly so. The exhibition and its extensive supporting program are a real celebration – from the Long Thursdays with music, food, and drinks to the accompanying film screenings. The Brandhorst is bringing the vibrant energy of New York’s art scene to Munich. This is what modern exhibitions should be like. A huge thank you to the whole team!”

Director Hochdörfer shared Blume’s excitement: “We’re overwhelmed by the sheer number of people who have visited ‘Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. Party of Life.’ This incredible interest shows just how relevant the work of Andy Warhol and Keith Haring remains today. Created during a time of significant social and political change, their art addresses themes like consumer culture, queerness, the fear of nuclear war, the stigma of disease, and the search for community during times of crisis – all of which resonate strongly with the questions and discussions of our own time.”

“Party of Life” is the first comprehensive institutional exhibition worldwide to focus on both Warhol and Haring. Taking its name from the theme of Haring’s legendary birthday parties, the exhibition transports visitors to the vibrant world of the 1980s: MTV, discos, voguing, hip-hop, New Wave, and graffiti all play a part in telling the story of Warhol and Haring’s artistic friendship. The exhibition highlights the parallels in their artistic philosophies, their openness to collaboration, and their shared belief that art should be accessible to everyone.

Beyond their famous key works, the exhibition also features films, photographs, archival materials, posters, records, and everyday objects, offering new perspectives on these two iconic artists. The Museum Brandhorst, which houses the largest Warhol collection in Europe (over 120 works) alongside a growing collection of Haring’s pieces, is the perfect venue for such an ambitious undertaking.

Curated by Franziska Linhardt, “Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. Party of Life” will remain open at the Museum Brandhorst until Sunday, January 26, 2025. Looking ahead, the museum will open “Five Friends. John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly” on April 9, 2025.
