Callum Innes - From Memory |

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND.- The Fruitmarket Gallery presents Callum Innes - From Memory, on view through November 19, 2006. This exhibition of new and recent paintings by Callum Innes brings together the themes and preoccupations of his practice over the last fifteen years. Examples from his series of Identified Forms, Isolated Forms, Repetitions, Monologues, Resonances and shellac paintings join a substantial body of Exposed Paintings, from the earliest to the most recent, in a stunning exploration of the development of the artist's visual vocabulary.
Innes's paintings are rhythmically meditative, the result of a process that involves the repeated removal as well as application of paint. Calm and authoritative when exhibited, they nevertheless bear the traces of the controlled chaos of their production, the creative and destructive interaction of paint and turpentine.
Innes's paintings are sensuously and intellectually compelling. Working on several canvases at once, the regular unfolding of the group of Exposed Paintings periodically interrupted by one from another series, the artist builds a complete painterly language. This exhibition offers the opportunity to trace the development of this language from one work to the next, over time and in space, the paintings speaking one to another as well as to the viewer.
