DAVIS, CA.- The Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California, Davis, is thrilled to unveil the first U.S. presentation of Italy’s renowned Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection.

Opening January 26, Through Their Eyes spotlights the international and intergenerational perspectives of 30 women artists drawn from the contemporary art collection of Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo.

Through Their Eyes: Selections from the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection brings together more than 60 works of painting, photography, sculpture and video by some of the most prominent artists working in the art world today, as well as rising new voices. From iconic images — photographer Nan Goldin’s Joey on my roof, NYC (1991) or Barbara Kruger’s Untitled (Not ugly enough) (1997) — to newer imaginaries — Canadian painter Ambera Wellmann’s To a Girl in a Garden (2023) or American artist Danielle Mckinney’s She (2023) — the exhibition gives visitors and the university community the chance to experience world-class art. Each touches on the construction of identity, particularly through the lenses of gender and sexuality, using different methods — including humor, exaggeration, shifting scale and the language of advertising — to investigate stereotypes and expectations.

Organized by six groupings — Infinite Possibilities, Systems of Value, Becoming a Commodity, The Private and The Public Body, The Notion of the Facade, and In Front of the Camera/Behind the Scenes — the exhibition is curated by Manetti Shrem Museum Associate Curator and Exhibition Department Head Susie Kantor. Spanning 45 years, these works point to the long and ongoing conversation around these topics.

“We are excited that Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo has chosen our university museum as the venue for the U.S. premiere of her collection,” said Founding Director Rachel Teagle. “It’s an extraordinary opportunity to showcase diverse, groundbreaking work and build upon the museum’s track record of featuring women artists at significant moments in their careers.”

Featured Artists: Giulia Andreani, Vanessa Beecroft, Berlinde De Bruyckere, June Crespo, Ana Elisa Egreja, Jana Euler, Isa Genzken, Nan Goldin, Mona Hatoum, Barbara Kruger, Zoe Leonard, Sherrie Levine, Sarah Lucas, Jumana Manna, Wangari Mathenge, Danielle Mckinney, Tracey Moffatt, Jill Mulleady, Shirin Neshat, Katja Novitskova, Paulina Olowska, Catherine Opie, Christina Quarles, Cindy Sherman, Anj Smith, Rosemarie Trockel, Andra Ursuta, Hellen van Meene, Ambera Wellmann and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.

“It is an honor to kick off a year of celebrations for the 30th anniversary of Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo with this special exhibition at the Manetti Shrem Museum,” said Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. “Since the beginning of my collecting journey, I’ve been drawn to the work of womenartists. California has always had a special place in my heart, thanks to the artists I’ve worked with that have lived and worked there.”

Sandretto Re Rebaudengo added, “Bringing the collection to Manetti Shrem Museum for its U.S. debut was a natural choice. The museum has always supported the work of women artists, and due to its status as a university museum, shares my values on the importance of art education, which has been a driving force for the collection and the Fondazione since their inception.”
