FRANKFURT, GERMANY.- Städel Museum presents Tobias Rehberger Patria o Muerte, 2006, a work for the Städel Museum. "Patria o Muerte" (Fatherland or Death) is the title of Tobias Rehberger's work shown in the Städel Museum. Commissioned specifically for its place of presetation at the point where old structure and annex intersect, the new acquisition is aimed at redefining this axis connecting the differet parts of the collection. In accordace with Rehberger's usual approach, the concept of "Patria o Muerte" is based on another artist's idea. I 1959, the Austrian sculptor Erwin Hauer developed a ceiling structure for the American architect Philip Johnson which was to be realized in the casino of La Habana, Cuba. Both the architect and the artist had been involved in the design of this "Untitled Continuum," as the work was called, and the elaboration of its basic form. The project could not be carried out because of Fidel Castro's Cuban Revolution. Now, almost fifty years later, a quotation of this form - a relief-like geometric aluminum structure - presents itself as a ceiling sculpture in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.
