STAVANGER.- Kunsthall Stavanger is a leading space for contemporary art, committed to fostering bold artistic experimentation, critical discourse, and meaningful encounters. Since its founding in 2013, the Kunsthall has emerged as a vital site for contemporary artistic production and mediation. Our trailblazing program includes both Norwegian and international artists, and encompasses exhibitions, artwork commissions, public programs, and initiatives for children and youth. With a program that embraces diverse voices and urgent cultural debates, the Kunsthall operates as a crucial platform for critical artistic and curatorial inquiry.

Firmly rooted in our local context and in active dialogue with global conversations, Kunsthall Stavanger’s commitment to artist-centered programming ensures that we remain a responsive, forward-thinking institution. We support artists at pivotal moments in their careers while fostering meaningful connections between art and society.

Guided by curiosity and criticality, we cultivate a welcoming space where contemporary art serves as a catalyst for transformation. Our combination of playfulness and intellectual rigor invites audiences not merely to observe but to engage—leaving our space with fresh perspectives and a renewed sense of inspiration.

Director
Application deadline: May 4, 2025. Starting date: January 1, 2026

Kunsthall Stavanger invites applications for the position of Director, a role that offers the opportunity to shape the future of one of Norway’s most dynamic contemporary art institutions.

The Board seeks a visionary and strategic-minded Director to lead the institution into its next chapter. The successful candidate will bring demonstrated leadership experience in the visual arts sector, a strong curatorial track record, and a nuanced understanding of the contemporary art field. We are looking for a candidate who excels in institutional development, strategic planning, and financial management, with a deep commitment to supporting artists, fostering critical artistic discourse, and guiding a small and dedicated team towards the implementation of the Kunsthall’s program. A strong international network and experience in fundraising and grant applications are considered key assets.

The Director will act as the institution’s key representative, building and sustaining relationships with artists, curators, galleries, funding bodies, and cultural institutions both in Norway and internationally. This position requires an individual who is both an inspiring leader and a compelling public advocate for contemporary art.

Housed in a historic 1920s building, Kunsthall Stavanger is at a moment of transition and growth. The incoming Director will be expected to explore innovative possibilities for the future development of the institution’s physical space, ensuring its continued relevance as a site for artistic production and engagement.

While English is the working language, proficiency in a Scandinavian language is highly advantageous.

The Director reports to the Board. The position is a fixed-term contract for five years, beginning January 1, 2026, with the possibility of extension. The workplace is centrally located in Stavanger, Norway.

Kunsthall Stavanger is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, and we encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds.
