5 Top Tips for Creating Food Art with Knives

Food art is used for various purposes including fine dining, decorations and much more. Whether you want to experiment with food art for fun, or want to improve your business, there are lots of ways you can use knives to create a spectacular creation that will wow the masses.

If you’re interested in learning more about food art, here are five top tips to get you started with using knives to create sculptures, landscapes and more from food.

1. Pick a Suitable Texture
Food textures can be challenging to work with, especially softer or temperature sensitive foods. By starting with foods that are easy to carve like watermelon and apples, you can practice and finesse all the basic cuts before moving onto more complex shapes and cuts.

Eventually you may want to move onto softer fruits and vegetables, but be careful to monitor your environment’s temperature carefully to ensure the quality of the carving material.

Don’t forget that the flavour is as important as the presentation side of food art - your final product must also taste amazing to be successful. To create the best projects, you might want to keep the flavours as simple as possible, but powerful enough to make an impact on the consumer.

2. Ensure You Put Safety First
Safety when using knives to carve food is of paramount importance to protect against injury. You will need to invest in an anti-slip chopping board, and start your chopping on a flat and stable surface to prevent accidental slipping.

You might also want to use gloves to improve grip, and keep your knives sharpened to prevent slippage when cutting.

You can use a whetstone to sharpen your knives effectively to increase their lifespan and quality.

3. Know Your Knives
When you’re preparing to create your food art, you’ll need to know which knives are the best for your creation.

Whether you need a paring knife, carving, slicing, or a boning knife, retailers like Cutting Edge Knives are experts in the field for providing you with everything you need to know about which knives will give you the flawless results you want.

4. Think About Garnishes
For food art, garnishes are imperative for providing the finishing touches to your masterpiece. Whether you opt for standard fragrant herbs like parsley or mint, or go for something more unusual such as flamed fruit peels, garnishes can be the perfect way to complete your food art project.

You can experiment with colour, texture and aesthetics to produce something eye-catching and unusual effortlessly.

5. Build Your Skills
If you’re hoping to be a budding food artist, building your skills over time will enable you to progressively improve your work and experiment with new techniques. Use different knives and practice cuts on various textures to enable you to see how your designs could come together to form the finished product.

You can also use YouTube tutorials to try out other techniques, and learn top tips and tricks. Using online forums can also help you to join a community of other artists and learn from each other.
