WHISTLER, BC.- The internationally renowned Toronto-based artist, Edward Burtynsky, presents a striking collection of his large-scale photo-based works entitled The Coast Mountains: Recent Works by Edward Burtynsky. This Special Exhibition is on display at the Audain Art Museum throughout the spring and summer. Regarded as one of the world’s most accomplished contemporary photographers, Burtynsky is acclaimed for his exploration of the relationship between human industry and the natural world. His latest series turns the lens onto the majestic landscapes of British Columbia's Coast Range, capturing their grandeur while highlighting the urgent issue of glacier retreat due to global warming.

Over the past four decades, Burtynsky’s photographic work has centered on capturing landscapes that are as beautiful as they are unsettling. In The Coast Mountains, Burtynsky shifts his focus to the pristine beauty of British Columbia’s natural environment, juxtaposing its breathtaking glaciers and icefields with the sobering reality of climate change. Central to the exhibition is a captivating image of the iconic Black Tusk, featuring miniscule hikers navigating its jagged ridges. A distinctive and instantly recognizable landmark, this volcanic formation is one of the most famous peaks along the Sea-to-Sky Corridor in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia.

“Burtynsky’s highly detailed images are equally awe-inspiring and troubling, with regard to the loss of glacial environments in spectacular settings,” says Dr. Curtis Collins, Director & Chief Curator of the Audain Art Museum.

The Audain Art Museum produced this exhibition, which is part of Vancouver’s 2025 Capture Photography Festival’s Featured Exhibitions Program.

The Coast Mountains is on view at the Audain Art Museum from April 27 to September 15, 2025.

Edward Burtynsky is a Canadian photographer and filmmaker, renowned for his large-format photographs of industrial landscapes and the environmental impact of human activity. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions worldwide, including at the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. Burtynsky’s acclaimed book Water was shortlisted for the 2013 Banff Mountain Book Award, and his feature-length film Manufactured Landscapes was nominated for an International Emmy.
