MISSOULA, MT.- In response to recent federal grant cancellations and proposed elimination of funding for key cultural agencies, directors of museums, galleries, and art centers across Montana have released an open letter calling on the public and elected officials to support arts and cultural institutions during this critical time.

The letter addresses the administration's recommendation for zero funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in the FY26 budget. Cultural institutions throughout Montana and nationwide have already received notices of grant cancellations from these agencies.

"What's at stake is not just programs or places, it is the shared experiences that connect us, the histories that define us, and the spaces that invite us to dream, reflect, and belong," states the letter, which was signed by arts and cultural leaders from across the state.

The letter emphasizes the economic impact of Montana's arts sector, which contributes approximately $2.4 billion in value to the state economy and supports over 20,000 jobs, representing nearly 3.3% of Montana's GDP according to the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies.

Beyond economic contributions, the leaders highlight how cultural institutions serve as rare spaces of common ground in a polarized society, fostering dialogue, education, and community connection. They note that arts institutions have historically received bipartisan support as essential components of democracy and national identity.

"The arts are non-partisan," the letter states. "This is a crucial moment—the artists and art we support, as well as the connections our communities make through the arts, are by the people, for the people, and reflect the complicated, messy, and multifaceted ideals of democracy, and should not be a political football."

The open letter calls for specific actions from the public:

• Contact representatives to speak out about grant cancellations
• Lobby for reinstatement of the NEA, NEH, and IMLS in the FY26 budget
• Visit and support local museums, galleries, and art centers through donations, memberships, or volunteering

"What's at stake is more than funding. It's our shared history and our empathy, and our right to tell the American story," the letter concludes.
