WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA.- The Pacific Design Center presents MOCA’S Mark Rothkos, on view through January 21, 2007. This is the first exhibition devoted solely to MOCA’s monographic holdings of paintings by the great New York School artist Mark Rothko, whose transcendent, luminous color-field paintings made a significant mark on 1950s abstract expressionism in the United States. With eight major paintings, the exhibition features key selections from the museum’s collection representing various stages of Rothko’s career, including paintings from the late 1940s, such as Untitled (14B) (1947; a gift of The Mark Rothko Foundation, Inc.) and Yellow and Orange (1949 a gift of The Rita and Taft Schreiber Collection—as well as Rothko’s signature 1950s paintings that are marked by rich, vibrant colors, from the museum’s germinal acquisition of masterpieces from The Panza Collection.

This exhibition is organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and curated by MOCA chief curator Paul Schimmel.
