YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.- The Butler Institute of American Art presents the exhibit Charles Hinman: Red Shift through January 14, 2007. Known for his shaped canvas sculpture, this exhibition presents recent investigations by Hinman in the form of three dimensional wall relief pieces, each with an object and field component involving color and space. Most of the 21 works in this show have never been shown publicly, and more than half were completed in 2006.
Charles Hinman was introduced to the New York art scene in 1964 in a show at the Sidney Janis Gallery titled SEVEN NEW ARTISTS. His work, which escaped the rectangle from the start, was noticed by Richard Feigen, and he joined Feigen's Gallery shortly thereafter. During the next half dozen years with Feigen, his canvasses became three-dimensional, and they have been distinguished by these shapes ever since. The exposure at Feigen resulted in his being collected by many major private collectors around the world as well as a number of major museums in the United States and Japan. Later, he joined the Galerie Denise Rene' where he began to exhibit in Europe also, represented by Denise Rene in Paris and Hans Mayer in Dusseldorf. He produced editions with Denise Rene in Paris and with Domberger in Germany. After Denise Rene closed her New York gallery and returned to Paris, he has continued to exhibit his work in galleries and museums in the United States and abroad. His work has been written about by numerous art critics and writers.
