ASHEVILLE, NC.- The Asheville Art Museum presents Native America: In Translation, an exhibition curated by Apsáalooke artist Wendy Red Star, on view from May 22 through November 3, 2025. Featuring work by seven Indigenous photographers and lens-based artists from across North America, the exhibition explores urgent questions of identity, heritage, land rights, and the ongoing impact of colonialism.
Building on Red Star's role as guest editor of the Fall 2020 issue of Aperture magazine, Native America: In Translation continues the conversation through personal and often experimental visual storytelling. Using self-portraits, performance-based imagery, and multimedia assemblages, the artists offer new perspectives on Native life and representation today.
In the Apsáalooke language, ÁakiwilaxpaakePeople of the Earthspeaks to Indigenous communities' deep connection with this land, said Wendy Red Star. These artists provide sharp perceptions rooted in their own cultures, speaking powerfully to the present while acknowledging the weight of history.
Native America features work by artists across generations and media, including Rebecca Belmore, Jacqueline Cleveland, Martine Gutierrez, Duane Linklater, Kimowan Metchewais, Alan Michelson, and Koyoltzintli. The Asheville Art Museum invites visitors to experience this celebrated exhibition, which reclaims visual narratives and deepens the conversation around Indigenous histories, cultures, language, and the enduring power of photography.
Wendy Red Star is a brilliant artist and has organized a remarkably thoughtful exhibition highlighting some of the most exciting artists working in photographic media today, says Jessica Orzulak, Associate Curator and Curatorial Affairs Manager. The featured artists explore pressing questions about our shared histories while pushing the medium in compelling new directions.
