NEW YORK.- Celebrate early 20th century design and elegance at Bonhams' December 16 Sale of 20th Century Decorative Arts in New York. The sale - to be held in the historic Fuller Building on Madison Avenue - will feature a strong selection of works by Important 20th Century designers: Tiffany Studios, Daum Frères, Gallé, Argy Rousseau, Schneider, Demetre Chiparus, Edgar Brandt, and Carlo Scarpa, a collection of rare Fratelli Toso glass and contemporary studio glass works by Richard Marquis, Steven Weinberg, Franz Vizner, and Libensky-Brychtova.

Leading the sale is a fine selection of Tiffany Favrile glass vases, including a Favrile glass humidor (est.$4,000/6,000), a fourteen-piece desk set in the Grapevine pattern, timeless bronze picture frames and an extraordinary lamps from Tiffany Studios. Highlights include a stunning 22 inch Peony table lamp, from the collection of legendary collector William B. Feldstein (est. $100,000-150,000), a fine 20 inch Dragonfly Lamp on a Cattail base (est. $80,000-100,000), a Black Eyed Susan Lamp with reticulated base (est. $35,000-45,000), several damascene lamps, and a Double Student Lamp (est. $25,000-35,000). Rounding out this strong section of works by the famed Studio is a hand crafted Seven-piece copper tea set (est. $25,000-35,000).

The ceramic section of the sale is highlighted by an unusual group of eight Amphora Portrait Vases from the early 1900s. Depicted in the style of Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha, the pieces feature allegories of Germany, Russia and Austria as portraits of women with elaborate coiffeurs and headdresses. "All eight of the lots are little gems of ceramic poise and elegance," says Frank Maraschiello, Bonhams' Director of 20th Century Decorative Arts. "Each piece is beautifully painted and highly decorated," he adds Several vases on sale are featured in the well-known academic guide to ceramics titled House of Amphora by Richard Scott. Estimates for the group range from $800-$6,000.

A collection of rare Fratelli Toso glass is also a prominent feature of the sale. Painstakingly acquired by the collector, the handmade Italian glass is credited with being responsible for the revival in artistic glass-making in Murano. The collection dates from 1895-1910 and is estimated modestly. Additionally, a group of French cameo glass will be sold, with pieces by Daum Frères, Gallé, Charles Schneider, Müller Frères and pâte-de-verre by Argy Rousseau, Walter Almeric and François Décorchement.

The Art Deco section will include works by the French Master Ferronier, Edgar Brandt, including a rare Gingko leaf Bombe fire screen (est. $25,000- 35,000), mirrors, a Gingko leaf chandelier (est. $15,000-20,000) and a Cobra table lamp (est. $20,000-30,000), as well as a selection of Bronze and Chryselephantine Statuary by Demetre Chiparus, Claire Colinet, Schmidt-Cassel, Pierre Le Faguays, Mirval and Marcel Bouraine. Estimates range from $5,000-30,000.

Concluding the sale will be a selection of works by contemporary artists including Studio Glass by Libensky-Brychtova, Steven Weinberg, Richard Marquis, Franz Vizner, Livio Seguso, Steven Powell, and Flo Perkins and an unusual group of contemporary silver works including objet de art and utilitarian pieces, designed by Vittorio Gregotti, Andrea Branzi and Carlo Scarpa.

Other notable highlights from the winter sale of 20th Century Furniture and Decorative Arts in New York City include: a rare lacquered two door wood cabinet by Pierre Bobot, featuring scenes from the Tuileries and Louvre gardens (est. $15,000-20,000) and a strong selection of wrought iron works by Paul Kiss, Michel Zadounaisky, and Oscar B. Bach.
