CHICAGO, IL.- Rago / Wright announced the offering of Takashi Murakamis monumental sculpture Panda Géant (2009), a rare and important work from the artists celebrated Superflat period. Estimated at $400,000600,000, the sculpture will be presented in the upcoming Post War & Contemporary Art auction on September 26th.
Standing over eight feet tall, Panda Géant brings to life one of Murakamis most recognizable characters, first introduced in the artists 2003 animated short Superflat Monogram created for Louis Vuitton. In the animation, the giant panda emerges atop a Vuitton trunk and transports a young girl into a surreal, logo-filled worlda kawaii-infused reinterpretation of Alice in Wonderland.
Fabricated in fiberglass-reinforced plastic, steel, and acrylic, Panda Géant exemplifies Murakamis Superflat philosophy: the collapsing of boundaries between high art, Japanese tradition, and contemporary consumer culture. Playful yet unsettling, the work transforms a cartoon-like character into a monumental meditation on fantasy, innocence, and spectacle.
Murakamis Panda Géant sits at the crossroads of fine art and luxury culture. Its both whimsical and commandinga work that resonates with collectors across contemporary art, fashion, and design, says Leon Benrimon, Senior Specialist of Fine Art at Rago/Wright.
With only three examples produced, this offering presents a rare opportunity for collectors and institutions to acquire one of Murakamis most significant large-scale sculptures.
Takashi Murakami's Panda Géant is featured in Post War & Contemporary Art on September 26th, beginning at 11 am eastern. The work can be viewed in person at Rago/Wright's partner location, LA Modern Auctions, by appointment.
