BERLIN.- CHAUSSEE 36 celebrates its 10th anniversary with a group exhibition which revisits the gallery’s past, while harkening towards the future.

"RETROVISION" presents and revisits three major group exhibitions that have shaped the programming of CHAUSSEE 36 Photography: Europe Under Construction (2015), Women on View (2019), and Behind Desire (2020). In addition, CHAUSSEE 36: Site Memories offers a rare look into the origins of the house through previously unseen photographs offering an intimate glimpse into the site’s transformation.

Through their historical, sociological, and philosophical perspectives, as well as the originality and relevance of their themes, these exhibitions form the foundation of the cultural institution.

Together, they shed light on the key societal issues that CHAUSSEE 36 has been exploring and championing over the past decade: European Democratic Values, Gender Equality, Eroticism and Sustainability.

Works by over 100 photographers have been featured in the original exhibitions, presented in collaboration with numerous partner institutions. In this anniversary exhibition, these themes are revisited in dialogue, accompanied by works from the Collection De Gambs, and enriched with newly-loaned works from partners for this special occasion. This retrospective project is accompanied by a special program of events and discussions on these themes and how they can and should manifest in our societal, political and cultural futures.

Located in Berlin-Mitte, CHAUSSEE 36 was conceived as an environment for creative exchange and artistic cooperation. Today, CHAUSSEE 36 houses not just CHAUSSEE 36 Photography, but also the De Gambs Photography Studio, SOMNIA Suites, CHAUSSEE 36 Event and Shooting Location, as well as BA AP Björn Albert Fotofachlabor. Behind this interconnected community lies a simple foundational philosophy – creating a place where artists, curators, cultural institutions, as well as decision makers in media, culture, business, arts, sustainable development, and politics come together to communicate, interact, and reflect on socially relevant issues. Together, we bring positive ideas to the table and strive to contribute to the change we want to see in the world.

The concept behind CHAUSSEE 36 is now being scaled up with the VERITAS project in Wittenberge – a future-forward regeneration, impact investing project where construction commences soon. It spans across 16 hectares of land over 34 landmark buildings with lettable space of 100,000 m2. VERITAS - the former SINGER sewing machine factory - aims to reinvent this industrial heritage as an Urbanotrop: a sustainable urban center that unites living, working, creativity, leisure, and innovation. Both CHAUSSEE 36 and VERITAS are driven by the same ambition: looking back and forward to create places where art, culture, and sustainability shape the world of tomorrow.
