NEW YORK, NY.- Christie’s announced Photographs, an online sale open for bidding from 25 September - 9 October. The sale spans the history of the medium, featuring highlights such as rare vintage prints by Edward Weston, Tina Modotti and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, post-war photographs by Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Peter Beard, Robert Mapplethorpe, Irving Penn, Gordon Parks, and contemporary highlights by Nan Goldin, Richard Misrach, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Wolfgang Tillmans, and many more.

Sale Overview

A leading highlight of the sale is a group of Ansel Adams Photographs from an Important Asian Collection. The top lot is an exquisite 20th Century mural print of Aspens, Northern New Mexico, 1958 (estimate: $200,000-300,000). Other notable lots include Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite National Park, California, 1958 (estimate: $60,000-80,000), Ice on Tioga Lake, Yosemite National Park, 1965 (estimate: $50,000-70,000) and Sand Dunes, Sunrise, Death Valley National Monument, California, c.1948 (estimate: $20,000-30,000).

Additional highlights come from Photographs from the Kayafas Collection, a collection from Gus and Arlette Kayafas, the founder of Palm Press, and from TIME OUT OF HAND: The Norman Mintz Collection. The Kayafas Collection features photographs ranging from the 19th century through to contemporary works by Abelardo Morell and represents a variety of photographic processes such as albumen, Woodburytype; salt prints, dye transfer, and more. The Norman Mintz Collection includes over 20 historically significant and fresh to market daguerreotypes.

Further highlights include iconic portraits by Richard Avedon such as Francis Bacon, Painter, France, April 11, 1979 (estimate: $80,000-120,000) and Marilyn Monroe, Actress, New York, 1957 (estimate: $70,000-90,000), and works by female photographers such as Tina Modotti’s Glasses, 1924 (estimate: $50,000-70,000) and Francesca Woodman’s Untitled, New York, 1979-80 (estimate: $20,000-30,000).
