AKRON, OH.- The Akron Art Museum shared the news of the passing of Dr. Mitchell D. Kahan, who served as Director of the Museum from 1986 to 2013 and, following his retirement, as an Honorary Trustee of the Board.

During his 26 years of leadership, Dr. Kahan reshaped the Museum and its role in the region. He guided the realization of the Museum’s landmark 2007 expansion, a bold architectural project that transformed the institution’s capacity and national visibility. Equally important, he strengthened the Museum’s collection and endowment, establishing four acquisition funds and doubling the collection during his tenure.

A passionate advocate for collaboration, Dr. Kahan cultivated partnerships across Akron’s cultural landscape, helping to position the Museum as a civic hub for creativity and connection.

Following his retirement, Dr. Kahan remained in touch with the Museum as an Honorary Trustee, continuing to offer thoughtful encouragement and perspective to its leadership.

“Mitchell’s impact on the Akron Art Museum and the field at large is lasting,” said Jon Fiume, John S. Knight Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Akron Art Museum. “I’m personally grateful for the conversations we shared and his deep understanding of the Museum’s history, his steady wisdom, and his genuine care for its future.”

The Akron Art Museum extends its heartfelt condolences to Dr. Kahan’s partner, Christopher Hixson, his family, and all who appreciated his many contributions to the Museum and community. A celebration of Dr. Kahan’s legacy will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Akron Art Museum.
