DECEMBER Portuguese surrealist poet and painter Mario Cesariny de Vasconcelos, 83, died. The Yale University Art Gallery’s main building—an icon of modernist architecture designed by Louis Kahn (1901–74)—reopened to the public. Edward Hopper’s Hotel Window, sold for $26,896,000, setting a record for the artist at auction at Sotheby’s. Musée Rodin presented Rodin. The Eros figures - Erotic drawings and watercolors 1890 – 1917. Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen presented The Genius of Bologna - Drawings from the 17th and 18th Centuries from the Public French Collections.The BA-CA Kunstforum opened Chagall – Masterpieces 1908-1922. The Board of Trustees of the J. Paul Getty Trust announced that James N. Wood, an internationally recognized arts leader, has been named to serve as president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Turner Prize 2006 was awarded to Tomma Abts. The 5th edition of Art Basel Miami Beach opened. MoMA launched a New Series "Focus: Paul Klee". J. Paul Getty Museum announced it would return two objects to Greece. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art opened Magritte and Contemporary Art: The Treachery of Images. The Tacoma Art Museum opened Frida Kahlo: Images of an Icon.
