CHATTANOOGA, TN.- The Hunter Museum of American Art presents Carrie Mae Weems, on view through April 29, 2007. This two part exhibition features Weems’ photographic series, The Louisiana Project and From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried. Weems seeks to explore how race, identity, gender and class have infiltrated American society through her work. The Louisiana Project delves into the carnival history and resulting culture of New Orleans through video projections, photographs and murals. From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried reinterprets the anthropological photographs of Africans and African Americans from major museum collections.

The Louisiana Project was organized by the Newcomb Art Gallery, Tulane University, New Orleans. From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried is on loan from the Collections of Eileen Harris Norton and Peter Norton, Santa Monica.
