GBP 10,000 Painting & Travel Scholarship Awarded

EDINBURGH.- Jackie Anderson has just been announced as this years RSA Alastair Salvesen Scholar 2007. With the award money of up to £10,000 Jackie intends to travel to Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indies, researching her heritage. In her work, Jackie dispenses with the traditional relationship in portraiture between the artist and the subject - her subjects are caught unaware, absorbed in their own thoughts. Her work explores the relationships between people and their surroundings and notions of privacy in public spaces. She is interested in the multicultural aspect of Trinidadian culture, as well as the different ways they use public spaces. Having graduated with a degree in Sociology from the University of Aberdeen in 1995, she taught herself to paint and was exhibiting shortly afterwards, her first being the finalist exhibition for the Noble and Grossart Painting Prize in 2000. She completed a Master of Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone Art College in Dundee in 2002 and has exhibited widely since then. Originally from Killearn, Jackie now lives and works in Glasgow.
