PONCE, PUERTO RICO.- Museo de Arte de Ponce presents two exhibitions of works from its permanent collection: In the End Everything Lands in Its Place: Recent Acquisitions of the collection of Museo de Arte de Ponce and Printmaking as a Social Force. Both exhibitions include works of art that are part of the museum’s collection.

In the End Everything Lands in Its Place: Recent Acquisitions of Museo de Arte de Ponce

A sample of the donated works of art and acquisitions made by Museo de Arte de Ponce (MAP) in the last five years are part of In the End Everything Lands in Its Place. The peculiar name of the exhibition comes from a phrase that appears in El viaje of Rafael Villamil, one of the works of art included in the paper series of the museum which is part of the exhibition.

Cheryl Hartup, Chief Curator of the museum selected that name for the exhibition to motivate the public who visits the exhibition to analyze how and why these works of art have become part of the museum’s collection.

In the End Everything Lands in Its Place includes more than 23 works of art ranging from paintings, engraving, carved saints. It also presents works of art of 14 Puerto Rican artists, among them Myrna Baez, Carmelo Sobrino y Jorge Zeno. Two of the works included in the exhibition are Retrato de Martín Zapater by Francisco de Goya, which was acquired in 2002 and Hombre con pipa by David Alfaro Siqueiros, acquired in 2006.

Many of the works that are exhibited were donated by artists and collectors who have a close relationship with the museum. Others that now belong to MAP’s collection stayed for a long time in the study of the artists, galleries of art or in private collections. In fact, it is probable that some of the works were sold in auctions in several occasions before arriving at the institution, where is possible to share them with the museum visitors.

MAP extends its gratefulness in memory of its founder, Don Luis A. Ferré as well as to all the people that have donated, have promised to donate, those that have contributed in the acquisition of important works, as well as those that feel that the perfect destiny for an art work is Museo de Arte de Ponce.

Printmaking as a Social Force

Printmaking as a Social Force focuses in presenting how engraving has served to shape the social preoccupations and to make them public to the society in order make people take actions in the issues. The sample includes 16 pieces that belong to the museum’s collection. The 36 edition of the portfolio created to commemorate the first centenary of the abolition of slavery as well as engravings about nationalism and the revolution are part of the pieces in the exhibition. It also includes works in xylography, linoleum, lithography and serigraphy of artists like Jose R. Alicea, Myrna Baez, Arnold Belkin, Bernard Dreyfus, Antonio Maldonado, Carlos Raquel Creek and Jose Antonio Torres Martinó, among others.

Some of the pieces in Printmaking as a Social Force are Abolición? by Rafael Lopez del campo, Hurricane of the North by Carlos Raquel Rivera and Homenaje by R. Rivera.

Both exhibitions, which do not have an additional cost of entrance, will be presented through April 15. For more information please call (787) 840-1510.
