EAST LANSING, MI.- The Michigan State University Department of Art & Art History is please to present Visiting Artist & Scholar Jerome Witkin on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kresge Art Center, room 108.
A painter and professor of fine arts at Syracuse University, Witkin is considered one of the most important living American figurative artists. His work can be found in collections ranging from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Hirshhorn. The second edition of Life Lessons: the Art of Jerome Witkin was recently published by the Syracuse University Press.
Witkins work investigates the contemporary portrait, the artist studio as subject, and the boundaries of the human psyche. At times delving into the darker eras of human history such as the Holocaust and 9/11 or political themes ranging from torture to the AIDS crisis, his work often deals with moral and social issues. Witkins complex narratives have the power to encourage us to look inward and reexamine our perceptions of reality in this intricate world.
