For photographer Ekaterina Modina, light has long been more than a technical component of an image. Across portraiture, exhibition practice and research, she has developed an approach in which light becomes a visual language of emotion, atmosphere and human presence.

In 2024, this approach received professional recognition when Modina became the recipient of the Language of Light Award within A.L.L. Gallery’s Art Awards 2024.

The Art Awards recognize outstanding talents whose works were presented through the gallery’s art events during 2024. The evaluation criteria include artistic mastery and uniqueness, innovation and contribution to the development of art, relevance to the award concept, and the visual and conceptual strength of the work.

Modina received the Language of Light Award for Photo Series / Photo 2. A.L.L. Gallery cited her distinctive artistic vision and her exploration of light as an element capable of transforming photographic imagery into a dialogue between atmosphere, emotion and human presence.

The award marked recognition for outstanding achievements in contemporary photography, particularly for Modina’s ability to connect technical control with a distinctive artistic language. In her photographs, light and shadow do more than define a face or a space: they guide perception and become part of the emotional structure of the image.

The selection was made by a jury combining curatorial, photographic and artistic experience, including Snezhanka S. Nikolova, founder of A.L.L. Gallery and curator of its art events; Anna Mandrikyan, an international professional photographer and permanent member of the gallery’s selection committee; and Aleksei Volchkov, an international artist working in visual and applied art.

Modina’s international recognition began well before 2024. Over the years, her work has been presented internationally across Russia, the United Kingdom, Estonia and the United States. In 2019, two of her works were shown at Talant Rossii, an international competition, exhibition and contemporary-art fair in Moscow. In 2021, she won First Place in the Female Portrait category at the Russian Photo Awards, an important milestone in the development of her portrait practice.

Her exhibition activity later expanded internationally. In 2023, Modina’s work was presented in the London exhibition Dreamscapes and in The Era of Creativity. Non-Artificial Intelligence in Photography at the Gallery of Classic Photography in Moscow.

In January 2024, she presented the solo photography exhibition ONLY YOU at Macy’s Herald Square in New York, centered on the contemporary female portrait and the emotional individuality of the person before the camera. A second solo project, Family Stories (Perejutud), was shown at the Narva Cultural Center “Rugodiv” in Estonia in January and February 2024, exploring motherhood, childhood, memory and the subtle gestures through which intimacy and belonging are formed.

Modina’s long-term exploration of studio lighting also led to the creation of her methodological guide The Art of Studio Lighting: An Author’s Methodology of a Professional Photographer in 2017. Rather than offering professional photographers a set of fixed lighting schemes, the methodology focuses on understanding the function of each light source and learning how to analyze, reconstruct and adapt lighting to different subjects, spaces and artistic objectives.

Since 2019, elements of the methodology have also been used in photography education at the Institute for the Humanities and Information Technologies (IGUMO) in Moscow, and Modina has presented the approach through professional workshops in several Russian cities.

Her professional practice is complemented by research on photography and visual culture. Since 2021, Modina has published studies examining light and shadow, principles of Renaissance composition and the role of cultural traditions in photographic imagery.

Her professional experience has also included evaluating the work of other artists: in 2023, Modina served as a jury member of the Hungarian Contemporary Art Prize.

Across awards, exhibitions, professional education and research, Modina’s work reflects a sustained effort to expand the expressive possibilities of photography. Her international recognition has developed across countries and professional contexts, while the Language of Light Award gave a clear name to the artistic direction at the center of her practice.

Photographers who transform technical knowledge into an individual visual language make a meaningful contribution to the development of contemporary photographic art internationally. In Modina’s work, light becomes not simply illumination, but a means of expression, interpretation and human connection.
