EAST LANSING, MI.-The Kresge Art Museum presents Sorrow Unmasked: Images of Grief, Mourning, and Remembrance, on view through July 27, 2007. INSPIRATION:“From the time I was nine years old I have been fascinated by the Kennedy family. My inspiration for this exhibition was a photograph of Jacqueline Kennedy taken following her husband’s burial: here, the stoicism displayed throughout John F. Kennedy’s state funeral gives way to grief and sorrow as she clutches the folded American flag that covered his coffin. Inspired by Jackie, I decided to explore how the universal themes of grief and mourning have been represented in art from the Renaissance through the present day.” - Shannon Karol, Kresge Art Museum Intern.

This exhibition of prints and photographs from the 16th through the 20th centuries, drawn from the Kresge Art Museum collection, examines the complex human emotions that are felt following the loss of a loved one, as well as traditions related to death. From scenes of mythical and Biblical deaths to funeral processions and views of tombstones and cemeteries, these images illustrate the myriad ways we deal with issues of grief, mourning, and remembrance.
