As Others See Us - Portraits from the Highlands
John Byrne - Self-portrait.

EDINBURGH.- The Royal Scottish Academy presents As Others See Us - Portraits from the Highlands, on view 30 June - 29 July 2007 (John Byrne RSA - Steven Campbell, Calum Colvin RSA - John Bellany HRSA, Alex Main - David Eustace, Allan Macdonald - Eugenie Vronskaya, Craig Mackay - Pat Semple, Gordon Robin Brown - Jennifer Houliston). As Others See Us celebrates the long tradition of artist’s portraiture and continues with the theme of Higland Culture in 2007. Twelve artists whose work has specific links with the Highlands have been invited to create both a self portrait and a portrait of another artist. They have been paired with an artist of interest to them or as suggested by the curator, thereby creating both a literal and artistic dialogue. There will be at least 24 works from the 6 pairings accompanied by a full colour catalogue with images, short artist’s bios and statements. As this exhibition required many of the artists to explore outside of their usual working boundaries, the essays reflect on how they responded to this challenge of being both the observer and the observed. A recent addition to the RSA Programme, this exhibtion was curated by Gordon Brown in partnership with Highland Council Exhibitions Unit and Highland 2007.
