Galerie Mourlot Opens With Keith Monda Exhibit |

LOS ANGELES, CA.- With humor and playfulness rarely glimpsed in contemporary art – or at least rarely carried off so successfully – Keith Monda’s colorful works of mixed media sculpture, mixed medium on canvas and photography are joys to behold as well as pleasures to contemplate. The New York-born, Wesleyan-educated artist will show his Youngsters series for the opening exhibition of Galerie Mourlot Los Angeles in West Hollywood, October 9-November 24, 2007.
Join owner Eric Mourlot for Keith Monda’s opening night reception at Galerie Mourlot Los Angeles, 8763 Rosewood Avenue on Thursday, October 11 at 6:00pm.
Originated in 2006 as a series of mixed media sculptures with accompanying C prints, and then followed this year with additional series including one subtitled Observation Changes Everything, the works of Youngsters are inspired by the “transcendental mental abstractions” that storm through Monda’s mind, such as wind-swept leaves, fluttering flocks of birds, and even kisses from the artist’s lover. The process of creating the works is “a choreographed dance,” says Monda, “in which I control the rhythm and tempo of my body and objects to recreate and express those fleeting thought patterns.”
The result, as seen in works such as Pretty & Rich (18” x 18”), A Huggable Transcendence and the sculpture Jailbreak comes across as action paintings on film – each more than worthy of multiple viewings.
Galerie Mourlot Los Angeles is an ideal space for taking in Monda’s work. Founded by owner Eric Mourlot in Boston in 1991 and then relocated to New York in 2006, Galerie Mourlot recently expanded west to Los Angeles with its roster of gifted contemporary artists. The gallery’s illustrious roots trace back to artistic collaborations with Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse and Joan Miró among others, as the legendary Mourlot family of Paris revolutionized art lithography in the 20th century under the direction of Mourlot’s grandfather, Fernand Mourlot. Under Mr. Mourlot’s supervision, Galerie Mourlot has always focused on serious and influential art – which is precisely what aficionados of contemporary art will find in Los Angeles.
