BERLIN.-CAMERA WORK Gallery will present from March 8th until April 19th the exhibition »Time and Silence« by Caroline Halley. Born in France in 1971, Halley works as a photographer and video artist, fathoming old traditions and customs on travels to remote places. The project »Time and Silence« evolved within a period of six years (1999-2005) on a variety of expeditions. Halley's seeking gaze in Cambodia and Egypt, in India and Afghanistan, in Tibet and Nepal clearly reflects her curiosity for and fascination with foreign cultures. Accordingly, her photographs strikingly point at what has been lost on the way to modernity. Her portraits, such as that of an old Kenyan woman, are pristine and clear, and provide us with an insight into mankind's innermost self. Just as impressive are her landscape photographs, which remind us of the potential strength of an interconnection between human beings and nature. Neither time nor history has destroyed these forgotten civilizations that Halley has explored. Yet, they have silently managed to preserve their culture and identity from global change.

Her black-and-white photographs fascinate with their softly directed lighting and their perfectly harmonious composition. With her keen sense of moods and atmospheres Caroline Halley takes the observer on a journey to unknown worlds.

The corresponding book »Time and Silence«, accompanying the exhibition and available through CAMERA WORK Gallery, is published by teNeues.
