Jersey City Museum Presents Sunday Sampler: SPRAWL Panel
'Locals Only' by Jersey City artist Dahlia Elsayed.

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- On Sunday afternoon, April 27th at 2pm, Jersey City Museum will host a discussion with a panel of artists from the SPRAWL exhibition and an area scholar as they talk about their work and how it relates to the complex state of New Jersey. In addition to artists Tim Daly, Dahlia Elsayed, Owen Kanzler and Andrew Demijian, Philip C. Dolce, Ph.D., Chair of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department and Professor of History at Bergen Community College, will join the group to discuss race, class and ethnicity in motion pictures about suburbia.

Born and raised in Jersey City, painter Tim Daly finds his inspiration in the unseen landscape surrounding Jersey City and the Meadowlands as well as the urban industrial landscape of the New York/New Jersey Metro area.

Dahlia Elsayed’s paintings combine text and imagery to create illustrated documents about her environment. Her art draws on her surrounding and autobiography to create contemporary map-like works of memory and emotional locations.

Andrew Demirjian is a video artist whose work examines mass media and its psychological and cultural effects on the individual. Like his piece in SPRAWL, which documents the all-too-familiar experience of driving in New Jersey, his work often explores the intersection of public and private spheres and the disconnections that people encounter in their daily lives.

Linden, NJ photographer, Owen Kanzler, has specialized in Ariel photography since 1978 and creates his photographs from the view of an airplane, which he flies himself. His striking photographs in SPRAWL document the housing tracts that dot New Jersey.

Sunday Sampler is an evolving series that happens each month. The series will highlight the many types programs and events we have on view at the museum. Sunday Sampler is a laid back and casual Sunday afternoon event where wine and light snacks are served as a way to bring artists and art enthusiasts together to mix, mingle and network. Gallery tours will be offered as part of the Sunday Sampler Series. Sunday Samplers act as a way to enhance events and programs already in place.
