Hugo Bastidas: A Prefect World |

JERSEY CITY.- Jersey City Museum at The Majestic presents Hugo Bastidas: A Prefect World, an exhibition of recent digital portraits by Hugo Bastidas, acclaimed artist and Professor in the Art Department at New Jersey City University. The works are on view at The Majestic Theater by appointment through august 31, 2008. An opening reception for the exhibition will take place as part of JC Fridays, the city-wide day of free art events, on Friday, June 6, 6pm-8pm. Refreshments will be served. Also on June 6 and in honor of JC Fridays, Jersey City Museum will offer free admission to the museum at 350 Montgomery Street from 12pm-5pm. Exhibitions currently on view include SPRAWL, (RE)possessed, and FIRST LOOK. About Hugo Bastidas:Mr. Bastidas received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and his Masters of Fine Art from Hunter College in New York City. He has a number of awards including a Robert Smithson Scholarship, a Fulbright Fellowship, Pollack-Krasner Grant and a NJEA Jersey City Museum Grant.
The Nohra Haime Gallery in New York City has represented him for the past fourteen years where he has had 12 solo shows. The internationally respected critic and art historian Robert Morgan wrote the catalogue text for Bastidas in his 2002 show Omens in Grisaille at the Nohra Haime Gallery. This show was reviewed in Art in America, February 2003,and Artnexus, winter 2003. He represented the United States in the Cuenca Biennial, Cuenca, Ecuador, 1999 and the Sharjah Biennial, United Arab Emirates, 2001. He has produced over 166 paintings and some 270 oil sketches in the past 15 years in the present black and white genre. His works are in private and public collections worldwide. He participates in numerous group and solo shows annually. The artwork has had over 70 critical reviews. The group show, Images of Time and Place: Contemporary Views of Landscape, Lehman College Art Gallery received wide national acclaim. He is also a digital photographer. His digital work has been shown in both US and Europe.About JC Fridays: JC Fridays is the citywide day of arts and culture in Jersey City, which is held at the start of every season with an exciting program of free events open to the public. The series was launched in Spring 2005 by a group of Jersey City artists and arts organizations to better promote the arts in the city. Since its inception, the number of participants has doubled through increasing outreach to Jersey City's neighborhoods, organizations, businesses and artists.
