Friedrich Petzel Gallery Announces Maria Lassnig's Exhibition
Maria Lassnig at the Serpentine Gallery in London.

CINCINNATI.-Friedrich Petzel Gallery announced Maria Lassnig’s first major U.S. survey exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Center Cincinnati,
opening September 20, 2008. This show will travel to Cincinnati from its original venue at the Serpentine Gallery in London and will run through January 11, 2009. Maria Lassnig’s work is also currently on view at the 55th Carnegie International, “Life on Mars,” through January 11, 2009.

Maria Lassnig is considered one of the most preeminent international artists today. Her work has been exhibited in galleries, museums and institutions since the early 1950s. Having coined the term “body-awareness painting,” Lassnig’s work depicts the artist as her own model in different emotional and physical states. These pictures are not traditional self-portraits; instead they express the artist’s inner awareness.

Born in 1919, Lassnig currently lives and works in Vienna. Her work has been the subject of numerous international exhibitions. She represented Austria, along with Valie Export, at the 1978 Venice Biennale. Most recently, Lassnig participated in WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
