AMSTERDAM.-Foam presents the first solo exhibition by the young Italian photographer. Domingo Milella (b. 1982) in the Netherlands. Over the last six years Milella has worked on a major project documenting the urban landscape and focusing in particular on the boundary between city and nature. Each year Milella spent a month travelling to distant corners of Europe, USA and Mexico to photograph the landscape.

Milella’s perspective offers a fresh interpretation of the changing appearance of our contemporary environment. A recurring theme is the boundary between the natural landscape and the urban, and man’s role in this, while the struggle for space between man and nature is continually evident in subtle ways.

Milella records these panoramas using an 8 x 10 camera, choosing perspectives that leave little open space, which often creates a claustrophobic effect. Yet his photos are not without a sense of hope; nature’s ability to transform the environment in an urban setting is there for all to see.

Domingo Milella (b. 1981, Italy) lives and works in Bari, Italy and New York.

In 2005 he graduated at New York School of Visual Arts under Stephan Shore. He has shown work at Tracy Williams Ltd (New York), Brancolini Grimaldi Gallery (Rome) and has exhibited at Paris Photo and Art (212) in New York. He has taken part in group shows at Museo dell’Ara (Rome) and Castello Svevo and Pinacoteca Provenciali (Bari). Domingo Milella is represented by Brancolini Grimaldi Arte Contemporanea in Rome.

Domingo Millela is on show from 27 June to 31 August 2008 at Amsterdam’s Photography Museum, Foam.
