BOCA RATON.- The Boca Raton Museum of Art is pleased to announce the opening of I Shot Warhol, Wesselmann, Lichtenstein, Rosenquist and Indiana: Photographs by Bob Adelman and William John Kennedy, 57th Annual All Florida Juried Competition and Exhibition and the Boca Raton Museum Artists’ Guild Biennial Exhibition. The exhibitions will run through September 7.

I SHOT WARHOL, WESSELMANN, LICHTENSTEIN, ROSENQUIST AND INDIANA: PHOTOGRAPHS BY BOB ADELMAN AND WILLIAM JOHN KENNEDY
Many Pop artists’ lives have intimately entwined with photography. In the 1960s, Andy Warhol (1928-1987), Tom Wesselmann (1931- ), Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997), James Rosenquist (1933- ) and Robert Indiana (1928- ) gained international attention as key leaders of the Pop art movement, which championed the use of popular culture and mass-produced objects as artistic subject matter. This exhibition presents more than 60 images of these American artists, photographed at the height of their careers by two photographers whose lives crossed paths with many of the greatest artists of their day.

Bob Adelman (American, born in Brooklyn, New York 1930- ) shot images of Warhol, Wesselmann, Lichtenstein and Rosenquist for many years. A world-renowned photojournalist, author, editor, and teacher, Adelman has photographed cover stories for countless magazines including Esquire, Time, People, Life, New York, Harper's Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, and Paris Match, and has more than a dozen books published of his work.

William John Kennedy first photographed Robert Indiana in the early 1960s, when he first came to prominence as a Pop artist working with words and signage as iconographic imagery, such as his 1964 LOVE composition. Kennedy photographed Warhol at The Factory, his New York studio, and at various locations beginning in 1964. Kennedy’s Warhol images were forgotten and placed in storage at his New York City studio where they remained for many years while Kennedy achieved success as a freelance photographer for New York City advertising agencies. Kennedy’s Warhol images were first printed from the original transparencies in 2004, and have been shown in Miami, Chicago and New York City galleries. Kennedy, who attended the Pratt Institute and the School of Visual Arts, lives in Miami, Florida today and continues to shoot fine art photography.

This exhibition has been co-organized with Rosenbaum Contemporary art gallery in Boca Raton. Rosenbaum Contemporary will exhibit the photography of Bob Adelman and William John Kennedy concurrently with the Museum’s exhibition.

57th ANNUAL ALL FLORIDA JURIED COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION
As the state’s oldest annual juried competition, over the years, the Museum’s All Florida has introduced the work of thousands of Florida artists working in all media – emerging, under recognized, and established younger and mid-career artists. The 57th All Florida Juried Exhibition reinforces the Museum’s commitment to Florida artists, provides professional exhibition opportunities for emerging artists, and reveals a provocative glimpse — through Florida artists’ eyes — of the state-of-the-art today. This year’s co-jurors are Jan van der Marck, former Chief Curator at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and Jef Bourgeau, Director of the Museum of New Art, Detroit, Michigan, who will review submissions, selecting the exhibition and awards.

BOCA RATON MUSEUM ARTISTS’ GUILD BIENNIAL EXHIBITION
A juried exhibition for professional artist members of this Museum affiliate organization held every two years during the companion competition – The All Florida. A range of work is always represented which describes the pluralistic nature of artists working in South Florida. This exhibition of The Boca Museum Artists Guild, a professional working artist’s organization, pays tribute to the level of artistic excellence existing in this state and showcases its membership’s depth of talent.
