BROCKTON, MA.- Fuller Craft Museum presents Micah Sherrill: A Language of FacesPortraits + Icons on exhibition in Fuller Craft Museums Courtyard Gallery through March 8, 2009. North Carolina artist Micah Sherrill the son of potter and sculptor, Michael Sherrill creates mixed-media wall-works filled with surreal and iconic images. Figures from pop culture such as Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, Paul Newman and Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman are placed in mysterious settings that illuminate their subjects. Portraits of artists and family members are given iconic stature and suffused with adoration. Predominantly self-taught, Sherrill has developed a unique palette and technique to express his artistic vision.
I want to use the cultural icons in my life to have spiritual conversations and I want fiction and fables to become illustrations of real truth, said Micah Sherrill. Constant tactile exploration stems out of my belief that, if it is worth looking at, it is worth touching. While balancing this dialogue between material and subject matter, I am installing synapses between texture and figurative gesture, between color and facial countenance. The surreal environments of my paintings become a more intuitive and satisfying way for me to describe and even connect the characters in each painting.
Micah Sherrill lives and works at his home in Asheville, NC. He is the son of potter and sculptor Michael Sherrill, under whom he apprenticed for a three year period from 1999-2002. Sherrills work has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions all across America. in solo exhibitions from North Carolina to Massachusetts for twenty years, and can be seen in the collections of the Corning Museum of Glass, the Museum of Arts & Design, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Lausanne, Switzerland, among others. In 2005, he was one of the artists selected to represent North America in the Cheongjiu International Craft Biennial in South Korea.
